ACSM publishes new contemporary issue statement on health and safety for female wrestlers

A new pronouncement titled “Contemporary Issue: Health and Safety for Female Wrestlers” has been published in the July issue of the ACSM journal Current Sports Medicine Reports (CSMR). The statement addresses the concerns for females in this exponentially growing sport and highlights primary risks among this cohort pertaining to weight-loss strategies, body composition and energy availability. Contemporary Issue statements are official ACSM pronouncements representing the organization’s stance on the topic at hand. Contemporary Issues are evidence-informed statements on timely, emerging and hot topics in sports medicine and exercise science. This statement was developed using a blend of research evidence and consensus of expert opinion. Further, the paper underwent a rigorous review and approval process. The statement was chaired by Craig A. Horswill, Ph.D., and the late Robert A. Oppliger, Ph.D. (deceased Dec. 21, 2023). Additional members of the writing group include Andrew R. Jagim, Ph.D.; Jill S. Moschelli, M.D.; Lisa M. Woodroffe, M.D.; and Susan A. Bloomfield, Ph.D. The paper is freely available to view and download
